You would like a feature monkey puzzle tree, but do not know how to find it or get it home … a puzzle indeed!
Araucaria araucana is a large, evergreen tree which can reach up to 60-70ft. tall and 30 to 35 feet wide, though the tallest specimen in its native haunt has been measured at over 150 ft. It is very slow growing and small specimens can take years to achieve even a modest size in our climate. It forms a loose, symmetrical, see-through crown, pyramidical in youth, eventually with a rounded or flattish top. The scale-like leaves are dark green, stiff, sharp-pointed and densely arranged on upwardly-sweeping branches, looking more reptilian than coniferous in character.
The common name of Monkey Puzzle comes from a comment from an Englishman in the 1800's, who thought it would certainly be a puzzle for a monkey to climb. Specimens planted years ago now make commanding silhouettes in the landscape, visibly recognisable from great distances.
Preferring well-drained soil, this species is surprisingly tolerant of many soil types. It is very tolerant of maritime exposures, salt-laden winds, and thrives in cool, mild climates.
